Why Every Day Should Be International Women’s Day

CdBsh6mUkAA_UvsInternational Women’s Day took place this year on March 8th. Women from all around the world took the time to embrace the amazing contributions that women have made to the world that surrounds them.

Whether it be women making scientific discoveries, women fighting for education all around the world, women paving the way for future entrepreneurs, or women making an impact on the people in their home communities, women of all ranks were being recognized for their contributions to society.

While this day seemed to bring about a sense of community among the women of the world, it is extremely important that this community remain strong every other day of the year.

Recently, Kim Kardashian West posted a nude picture of herself on her Twitter and Instagram. Needless to say, the internet went crazy over this post. We saw men tearing her self-expression down, and we even saw women tearing her down.

While some of the people who were making claims against her were urging her to encourage young girls to focus on further their education instead of relying on their looks, others praised her for her approach on promoting body positivity. What was not covered was how important both encouraging young girls to focus on educating their minds, and to feel comfortable in their bodies truly is. Both tasks are as important as the other, and continue to be reasons as to why the world should take time to embrace the educated and empowered minds of women from all over, regardless of how they choose to express it.

Females are strong, and so unbelievably influential, deserving to be recognized for just that every single day. Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 1.02.09 PM

To say that women have been making huge strides in regards to gender equality during this past year, would be an understatement. People are starting to take interest in intersectional feminism, thanks to influential women like Viola Davis (who is the first black woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress), who pointed out just how different races and ethnicities are treated in the eyes of feminism. Intersectional Feminism is as described by the Telegraph,

the view that women experience oppression in varying configurations and in varying degrees of intensity. Cultural patterns of oppression are not only interrelated, but are bound together…Examples of this include race, gender, class, ability, and ethnicity.”

Two women who really made the mark this year, are surprisingly young. Amandla Stenberg (best known for her portrayal of Rue in the Hunger Games), age 17, and Rowan Blanchard (best known for her portrayal of Riley Matthews on Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World), age 14, are this year’s Celebrity Feminists of the Year.

Stenberg is known for addressing cultural appropriation, and similarly to Viola Davis, intersectional feminism. She has acted as a guiding light for young women to learn to speak their minds and stand up for themselves.

Blanchard, who spoke at the UN Women Conference about our need for gender equality, has also addressed intersectional feminism in a very thoughtfully worded Instagram essay:

Both of these young ladies are clearly making their mark on the world, and letting everyone know that you’re never too young to make a difference.
