Why Every Day Should Be International Women’s Day

CdBsh6mUkAA_UvsInternational Women’s Day took place this year on March 8th. Women from all around the world took the time to embrace the amazing contributions that women have made to the world that surrounds them.

Whether it be women making scientific discoveries, women fighting for education all around the world, women paving the way for future entrepreneurs, or women making an impact on the people in their home communities, women of all ranks were being recognized for their contributions to society.

While this day seemed to bring about a sense of community among the women of the world, it is extremely important that this community remain strong every other day of the year.

Recently, Kim Kardashian West posted a nude picture of herself on her Twitter and Instagram. Needless to say, the internet went crazy over this post. We saw men tearing her self-expression down, and we even saw women tearing her down.

While some of the people who were making claims against her were urging her to encourage young girls to focus on further their education instead of relying on their looks, others praised her for her approach on promoting body positivity. What was not covered was how important both encouraging young girls to focus on educating their minds, and to feel comfortable in their bodies truly is. Both tasks are as important as the other, and continue to be reasons as to why the world should take time to embrace the educated and empowered minds of women from all over, regardless of how they choose to express it.

Females are strong, and so unbelievably influential, deserving to be recognized for just that every single day. Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 1.02.09 PM

New Year, New You: See What Your Horoscope Has in Store for You This Year!

What do the stars have in store for you this year?

Dec 22 – Jan 19

You’ve never been one for New Year’s resolutions, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be making some changes this year. You’ve let yourself be walked over by your friends and even significant others, but not this year. You won’t be afraid to stand up for yourself, and take some time to do what’s best for you, regardless of what others might think. Stay strong, because this will be your best year yet!

Jan 20 – Feb 18

You’ve felt yourself distancing from your closest friends in this past year, and this year you’ll try to get things back to the way they once were. Sure people change, but these are the friends that will always support you no matter what. Taking time away from your work to indulge in movie nights with your girls will help to bring you guys back to the strong friendship you once had.

Feb 19 – Mar 20

This past year was a tough one for you. You might have felt a bit lost, and in need of direction. Changing majors, or moving might have your mind in a whirl. You’ll turn to your family a lot more this year, and realize that it’s perfectly fine to ask for their guidance. Chances are, they’ve been through something similar!

Mar 21 – Apr 19

You’ve been working your butt off this past year, with seemingly no reward. It’s time for you to treat yo’self! Your hardworking demeanor deserves to have some kind of reward every once in awhile, so take yourself out on a shopping spree and go out with your girls to show off your cute new clothes! Letting off some steam will really help you be even more successful in this upcoming year.

Apr 20 – May 20

2015 flew by for you, and 2016 is going to be just as exciting a year. Your grades or work performance will soar past your wildest expectations! Promotions, or new employment opportunities will follow due to your increased drive to succeed. This is your year!

May 21 – Jun 20

You might have enjoyed your break from school or work a bit too much, and from January 12-15th, you’ll find it particularly hard to get back in the swing of things. A huge deadline will get you back on path. But be careful, with cold weather comes the tendency to resort to not leaving bed. Make yourself get up and explore to keep your mind active!

Jun 21 – Jul 22

The full moon this month might cause you to go a little crazy spending your post holiday bonus. Step away from your laptop, and think about where that money should really be going (*cough* your textbooks *cough*). Once you’ve taken care of your books, then it’s time to shop!

Jul 23 – Aug 22

Your love life has been pretty nonexistent the past few years, and this year you’ll come to grips with that. With realizing that comes realizing you’ll spend more time focusing on yourself. Let’s be real, you deserve to be treated much better than you have been, and spending time taking care of yourself will bring you more happiness than any significant other ever could. And you never know, with Mercury in retrograde, you just might find love when you’re least expecting it.

Aug 23 – Sep 22

The past year has been a tough one for your best friend. They know you give the best advice, but you’ve refrained in the past from telling them the whole truth due to being afraid of hurting their feelings. This year, you’ll grow tired of seeing them being walked all over, and tell them the ugly truth. It might hurt for them to hear, but they’ll appreciate it more than you could ever know.

Sept 23 – Oct 22

You may always say, “my diet starts tomorrow,” but this year you’ll actually stick with this mantra. It’s never too late to work towards a better you. You’ll find temptations as you scroll across Pinterest, but your drive to stay in shape and live a healthier life for yourself will beat everything else.

Oct 23 – Nov 21

You’ve always wanted to venture out into the unknown, but never really found anyone to take that leap with you. This month, you’ll meet someone whose desire to travel matches your own. You’ll spend the next few months traveling up and down the coast, before heading on your first big adventure abroad.

Nov 22 – Dec 21

You have a lot on your plate, and barely find you have time to breathe. January will be a much needed relaxed month for you. However, come February, it will be hectic yet again. It’s nothing you can’t handle, however. You’ll come out stronger than ever, and enjoy relaxing in your bed on weekends even more than before.

Rowan Blanchard, age 14

To say that women have been making huge strides in regards to gender equality during this past year, would be an understatement. People are starting to take interest in intersectional feminism, thanks to influential women like Viola Davis (who is the first black woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress), who pointed out just how different races and ethnicities are treated in the eyes of feminism. Intersectional Feminism is as described by the Telegraph,

the view that women experience oppression in varying configurations and in varying degrees of intensity. Cultural patterns of oppression are not only interrelated, but are bound together…Examples of this include race, gender, class, ability, and ethnicity.”

Two women who really made the mark this year, are surprisingly young. Amandla Stenberg (best known for her portrayal of Rue in the Hunger Games), age 17, and Rowan Blanchard (best known for her portrayal of Riley Matthews on Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World), age 14, are this year’s Celebrity Feminists of the Year.

Stenberg is known for addressing cultural appropriation, and similarly to Viola Davis, intersectional feminism. She has acted as a guiding light for young women to learn to speak their minds and stand up for themselves.

Blanchard, who spoke at the UN Women Conference about our need for gender equality, has also addressed intersectional feminism in a very thoughtfully worded Instagram essay:

Both of these young ladies are clearly making their mark on the world, and letting everyone know that you’re never too young to make a difference.
